They Don't Call it Catching: A Relaxed Approach to Dating

E-mail Print PDF

Over the holidays I visited my Dad at his new clichéd retiree home, the Florida keys... whereby we did cliché retiree things like eating dinner before 5, cruising in his newly acquired classic car and of course going fishing at dawn. So there I was on the boat with dear ol’ Dad trying not to throw up and just enjoy the serenity of the ocean. An hour had gone by and all I had caught were “throwbacks,” defined as fish too big, too small or unfit for human consumption. My Dad on the other hand had caught several “beauties.” Dad clearly picking up on my growing frustration, handed me a cold one and said, “Honey, they don’t call it catching… they call it fishing.”

And so it is, when you go out mandidate shopping. If you go desperately hunting for fish in the sea, you seem to catch the “throwbacks” ending your evening in a fit of frustration, but if you have a calm, non-desperate approach like my dad does with fishing, you learn to enjoy the journey and you wind up attracting the “beauties.”

I took Dad's advice and astoundingly to me, the fish came right to my hook. By the end of our voyage, Dad an d I had caught 42 suitable fish, drank 11 beers, had countless laughs... and I had learned one invaluable lesson.

Here’s to fishing for all the great mandidates that ARE indeed out there in the sea.

Live and love largely,

Tristan

  1. Love that you turn everything you see into love and dating advice for your fans... these everyday experiences make it so much more relatable. Your dad seems pretty cool too.

    Burst Your Tech Bubble

Waiting in line for a latte can be the ideal time to return a call or beat the next level of Brickbreaker and the idea of flying on a plane iPod-less sounds so 2001, but putting yourself in a technological bubble makes it hard for potential mandidates to break through to you. Buds in your ears or your pretty little face buried in a PDA not only makes it difficult for a guy to penetrate your tech zone, as purposefully or not, you are putting up a “do not disturb” sign. In a world filled with tech-obsessed busy bodies, being the antithesis to this is a refreshing sight to see, and a subtle invitation to guys. So the next time you’ve got some idle time, where sure, you could pound through a dozen emails, text your BFFs or get lost in your favorite new download, consider instead disconnecting from your techie gadgets and open up to connecting with a human hottie. I guarantee pushing a boys buttons will be more fun!
