Taking A Walk On Your Miss Jones Side

E-mail Print PDF

I, along with the majority of you I suspect have watched every episode of Sex & the City with analytical eyes, using it not only as means of entertainment but also as a life and love tutorial. It is one of those shows that regardless of life or love stage, you can relate to it. Now I’d also guess that you’ve played the “which character do you most resemble?” game with your girlfriends, bantering over brunch what makes you most like Carrie B.

Here’s the thing. Carrie may be the pinnacle of aspiration for most of us. Confident. Successful. Has a shoe collection to die for and hair that looks goddess-like beach wavy or bone-straight. Or perhaps in comparison to virgin-esque Charlotte, anal-retentive Miranda, and over-the-top promiscuous Samantha, she seems like the obvious choice.

But…

I think we need to reconsider a bit and perhaps nurture our inner Samantha Jones’ a little bit more.  Whereas Carrie lives safely next to the edge only occasionally flirting with the wild side (and typically regretting it), Ms. Jones dances with the devil passionately, with great fulfillment and notably in control. She saunters with an admirable jurisdiction over her actions and outcomes, which actually makes her, in my opinion, the most aspirational of all four characters. Samantha lives by only one person’s rules, her own. Granted, she lacks intimacy and vulnerability in relationships (until Smith J comes along), but she attains lust and spontaneity, something again, all of us could use a little bit more of in our typically routine lives.

Seriously, when in your love life is the last time you did something completely unbridled... something that would make your BFFs drop their jaws during a ladies night tell-all… or something that was worthy of an anonymous blog post on the MENu Dating True Story section?  If it has been more than 3 months, it’s time to do something that would make Auntie Samantha proud.

Now don’t mistake this post as direction to join an S&M club or have a 3-some (unless you want to - I don't judge!) Tapping into your inner Samantha is just about coloring outside of the lines a little… not overthinking before you do… or do not, in some cases.  Spiking your confidence… daring to try what excites you… testing your own limits.  Walking to your fullest height potential.  All of which could translate into anything imaginable, love aor life related… if you can dream it up, you can make it happen.  After all, if you were paying attention, you had 6 seasons o f phenomenal lessons from the ultimate professor.  Go big, grow big.

Live and love largely,

Tristan

p.s. If you need a little inspiration, listen to Cobra Starship’s Good Girls Go Bad… it is sure to help you unleash your inner Samantha… xo

    Burst Your Tech Bubble

Waiting in line for a latte can be the ideal time to return a call or beat the next level of Brickbreaker and the idea of flying on a plane iPod-less sounds so 2001, but putting yourself in a technological bubble makes it hard for potential mandidates to break through to you. Buds in your ears or your pretty little face buried in a PDA not only makes it difficult for a guy to penetrate your tech zone, as purposefully or not, you are putting up a “do not disturb” sign. In a world filled with tech-obsessed busy bodies, being the antithesis to this is a refreshing sight to see, and a subtle invitation to guys. So the next time you’ve got some idle time, where sure, you could pound through a dozen emails, text your BFFs or get lost in your favorite new download, consider instead disconnecting from your techie gadgets and open up to connecting with a human hottie. I guarantee pushing a boys buttons will be more fun!

    xo, Tristan
